Solitaire engagement rings are the original — a single center diamond, held by prongs alone, with no accent stones competing for attention. Defined by the 1886 Tiffany setting and continuously popular ever since, the solitaire delivers maximum diamond visibility, the most timeless aesthetic in fine jewelry, and the most flexibility for future resetting. The choice for clients who want to invest in the diamond itself rather than the surrounding metalwork.

The solitaire is the original engagement ring — a single diamond, held by prongs alone, with no accent stones competing for attention. It’s the most enduring setting style in fine jewelry, and the one most directly associated with the very idea of an engagement ring. Strip away every trend of the past century and the solitaire is what remains.
The format works because it gets out of the diamond’s way. With nothing surrounding the center stone, every facet of light return is fully visible. The diamond carries the entire visual weight of the ring, which means the cut, color, and clarity of the stone you choose matter more than they would in any other setting style. For clients who want to invest in the diamond itself rather than the surrounding metalwork, the solitaire delivers the cleanest possible expression of that investment.
The modern solitaire as we know it today was effectively invented in 1886, when Charles Lewis Tiffany introduced the “Tiffany setting” — a six-prong design that lifted the diamond above the band, exposing it to light from every angle. Before Tiffany’s innovation, diamonds were typically set into bezels or low-profile mountings that concealed much of the stone’s brilliance. Lifting the diamond into the air, supported only by minimal prongs, was a radical idea that transformed how engagement rings looked for the next 140 years.
The Tiffany setting wasn’t just an aesthetic choice — it was an engineering one. By raising the diamond and using thin metal prongs spaced at six equal points around the girdle, Tiffany maximized light exposure while maintaining structural integrity. Every solitaire engagement ring designed today, from minimalist four-prong settings to elaborate cathedral mountings, traces its lineage back to that 1886 design.
The solitaire’s century-and-a-half of continuous popularity rests on three qualities no other setting style can match: it works with any diamond shape, it suits any aesthetic from traditional to ultra-modern, and it ages gracefully through decades of changing trends. A solitaire chosen today will look just as right in 2050 as it does now — which cannot be said for most contemporary setting styles.
The solitaire also gives clients the most flexibility for the future. Should design tastes evolve, the center diamond can easily be re-set into a halo, three-stone, or split-shank mounting decades from now without compromising the stone itself. In our Scottsdale, Houston, Dallas, and New York studios, solitaires consistently account for our most-requested style — chosen by clients who understand that the most enduring choice is also the most flexible one.
The solitaire works with every diamond shape, but certain combinations consistently produce the most striking results. The choice of shape changes the entire personality of the ring far more than the prong count or band style does.
The round brilliant in a six-prong Tiffany-style solitaire remains the single most popular engagement ring design in the world, and for good reason. The round’s maximum brilliance is fully on display with no competing elements, and the six-prong support is structurally generous without obscuring the stone. We typically recommend a four-prong solitaire for clients who want a slightly more modern, minimalist read, and a six-prong for those who want maximum security and classical proportions.
Elongated shapes — ovals, pears, marquises, emeralds — also work beautifully in solitaire settings, often with shape-specific prong arrangements. Ovals and pears benefit from V-prongs at the curved tips for additional security. Marquises require V-prongs at both pointed ends. Princess cuts use V-prongs at all four sharp corners. The basic solitaire format adapts to every shape’s structural requirements without sacrificing the cut’s visibility.
Cushion and emerald cuts pair particularly well with bezel solitaires, where a thin band of metal wraps the diamond’s perimeter. The bezel echoes the architectural character of these shapes while providing additional protection at the corners. For radiants and Asschers, both four-prong and bezel solitaires work elegantly, and the choice often comes down to whether the client prefers more metalwork (bezel) or more diamond visibility (prongs).
Because a solitaire puts the diamond on complete display, the design decisions that matter most are the ones related to the diamond itself — not the setting. A few setting choices still shape the final ring, but the diamond is where most of the budget and attention should be focused.
In a solitaire, there’s nowhere for a diamond’s flaws to hide. Color, clarity, and especially cut quality all matter more than they would in a halo or three-stone setting where surrounding sparkle distracts the eye. We typically recommend prioritizing cut quality first (Excellent for rounds, ideal proportions for fancies), then clarity (SI1 or better, with attention to inclusion placement), then color (G or better for icy appearance, H–J acceptable for budget). The savings from compromising on color are meaningful and rarely visible to the eye; compromises on cut quality always show.
The classic decision in solitaire design is four prongs versus six. Four prongs read as more modern and minimalist, expose slightly more of the diamond’s surface, and create a slightly squarer overall outline (since prongs sit at 12, 3, 6, and 9 o’clock positions). Six prongs read as more traditional and classical, distribute structural load more evenly around the girdle, and create a softer, more circular outline.
Neither is objectively better — they’re different aesthetics. For active lifestyles, we often recommend six prongs for the added security; for clients prioritizing modern minimalism, we often recommend four. The ranges we look for when designing solitaire engagement rings are:
A cathedral mounting raises the diamond significantly above the band on visible “arms” that arch up from the band to the basket. The effect is dramatic and showcases the diamond from every angle, but the higher profile catches on clothing and is more vulnerable to impact. A low-profile mounting keeps the diamond closer to the finger, providing a more ergonomic everyday wear experience at the cost of slightly less dramatic visibility.
For most clients, we recommend low-profile or moderate-profile mountings unless the client specifically wants the cathedral aesthetic. Daily wearability matters more than people expect — and a ring that snags is a ring that gets removed.
Designing a custom solitaire is the most diamond-focused process in our studio. Because the setting is intentionally minimal, the diamond selection becomes the heart of the project rather than just one element among many.
Every solitaire project begins with a private consultation at one of our locations in Scottsdale, Houston, Dallas, or New York. In that first meeting, we explore your vision: the diamond shape you’re drawn to, the prong count and mounting profile you want, the band style that will live on your finger for decades, and your budget. For solitaires specifically, we always allocate the majority of the project budget to the diamond itself — because in a solitaire, that’s what people see.
With your direction set, we source a curated selection of GIA-certified diamonds matching your criteria. You’ll view each candidate in person under multiple lighting conditions, and we’ll walk you through how each stone’s cut quality, color, and clarity will read in a setting that hides nothing.
Once the diamond is chosen, our design team creates technical drawings and 3D renderings showing exactly how the prongs will sit, how the basket will support the diamond, and how the band will flow into the head. We refine the design with you over as many rounds as needed until what’s on the screen matches what you’ve imagined.
Production starts with a wax model, allowing one last round of physical adjustment before casting in your chosen precious metal. Our master jewelers then set the diamond by hand, sizing each prong individually to your specific stone — a step that mass-production solitaires routinely skip.
Every Finer ring is handcrafted in the United States by master jewelers with decades of experience. With solitaires, that craftsmanship is concentrated in the prong work. A custom solitaire has prongs cut to the exact angle of your specific diamond’s girdle, with precisely matched prong heights, perfectly smooth metal surfaces, and secure positioning calibrated to that stone alone. A mass-produced solitaire uses standardized prong geometry, which leaves gaps that allow the diamond to shift fractionally over years of wear.
The difference is invisible at first, but it shows up in service over decades: custom solitaires need re-tipping less often, hold their diamonds more securely through impacts, and read as visually refined in a way that machine-finished work rarely matches.
Understanding how the solitaire compares to other popular setting styles can help confirm it’s the right choice — or help you identify a style that suits you better. Each setting carries its own personality and trade-offs.
| Characteristic | Solitaire | Halo | Three-Stone |
|---|---|---|---|
| Center Diamond Visibility | Maximum — no competing stones | Reduced — accent stones surround | Reduced — flanked by two side stones |
| Perceived Size | True to actual carat weight | 25–30% larger than actual carat weight | Substantially larger overall ring footprint |
| Total Diamond Weight | Only the center stone | Center + ~0.25–0.50 ct in halo | Center + 0.50–1.50 ct in side stones |
| Style Character | Timeless, classical, focused on the stone | Romantic, sparkling, vintage-leaning | Symbolic, substantial, traditional |
| Maintenance Needs | Lowest — fewer stones, fewer prongs | Higher — many small accent settings to monitor | Moderate — three stones to check periodically |
Is a four-prong or six-prong solitaire better?
Neither is objectively better — they’re different aesthetics. Four prongs read as more modern, expose more of the diamond, and create a slightly squarer outline. Six prongs read as more traditional, distribute structural load more evenly, and create a softer outline. For active lifestyles, six prongs offer slightly better security. For minimalist aesthetics, four prongs are the cleaner choice.
Why does a solitaire cost less than other engagement rings of the same diamond?
A solitaire’s setting itself uses dramatically less metal and contains far fewer stones than a halo, three-stone, or pavé design. The actual diamond is the same investment, but the surrounding labor and material costs are lower. This is part of why solitaires let clients invest more in the diamond itself rather than the metalwork.
Can I add a halo to my solitaire later?
Yes. A center diamond set in a solitaire can almost always be reset into a halo, three-stone, or split-shank mounting at a later date — typically requiring only the cost of the new setting and labor. This is one of the reasons solitaires remain so popular: they preserve maximum future flexibility while delivering timeless presence today.
What’s the difference between a Tiffany setting and a generic solitaire?
“Tiffany setting” specifically refers to the six-prong knife-edge design Tiffany & Co. patented in 1886 — though the patent expired long ago. Today the term is used loosely to describe any classic six-prong solitaire. A true Tiffany-branded ring is sold only by Tiffany & Co. and carries a premium for the brand; the design principles are widely replicated by custom jewelers worldwide.
The solitaire is for the client who wants their engagement ring to be about the diamond — full stop. Whether you’re drawn to the format’s nearly 140-year heritage, its timeless flexibility across changing aesthetics, or simply the feeling of wearing a single brilliant stone with no distractions, a custom solitaire engagement ring is a piece designed to outlast every passing trend.

At Finer Custom Jewelry, we offer countless possibilities for customization while guiding you through the most beloved and enduring engagement ring styles.

Our expertise allows you to combine elements from different styles to create something truly unique.
Solitaire Engagement Rings – Timeless Elegance
The solitaire engagement ring stands as a testament to the philosophy that true beauty needs no embellishment. This elegant design features a single diamond or gemstone as its focal point, typically set on a simple band that elevates the center stone. Solitaire rings allow the diamond’s natural brilliance to take center stage, creating a look that never goes out of style. The clean lines and uncluttered setting make solitaire rings particularly versatile for everyday wear while offering timeless sophistication. For those who appreciate minimalist design with maximum impact, a custom solitaire ring from Finer Custom Jewelry provides the perfect canvas to showcase an exceptional stone.
Halo Designs – Magnifying Brilliance
Halo engagement rings surround the center stone with a circle of smaller diamonds, creating an effect that magnifies the brilliance of the main diamond and makes it appear larger. This style offers remarkable sparkle from every angle and creates a distinctive silhouette on the finger. Our custom halo designs range from classic round diamond halos to more elaborate double-halo settings that truly maximize impact. For clients seeking to enhance the presence of their center stone while adding intricate detail, a custom-designed halo ring provides both drama and sophistication. We especially excel at creating unique halo designs that frame fancy-shaped center stones, such as oval engagement rings with halos that perfectly contour to the stone’s shape.
Premium Materials For A Lifetime of Beauty
The longevity and beauty of your engagement ring depend significantly on the quality of materials used in its creation. At Finer Custom Jewelry, we source only the finest components to ensure your ring remains as stunning decades from now as it is on the day you first wear it.
Platinum – Known for its durability and natural white luster that never fades or tarnishes
18K Gold – Available in yellow, white, and rose, offering excellent durability with a higher purity content
14K Gold – A popular choice that balances gold content with strength for everyday wear
Ethically-sourced diamonds – GIA-certified natural diamonds or lab-created alternatives
Precious gemstones – Sapphires, emeralds, and other options for unique center stones
Our expertise extends beyond traditional choices, as we also work with contemporary metals and alternative materials when clients desire something truly unique. Each material is selected not only for its aesthetic appeal but also for its structural integrity and compatibility with your lifestyle and preferences.
GIA Certified Diamonds – Our Quality Promise
Every diamond featured in our engagement rings comes with full GIA certification—the gold standard in diamond grading worldwide. The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) provides unbiased, scientific evaluation of diamonds based on the renowned 4Cs: cut, color, clarity, and carat weight. This certification ensures that you receive exactly what you pay for and provides complete transparency about your diamond’s characteristics. Shimon Himovich personally selects each diamond, rejecting approximately 80% of stones that don’t meet our stringent standards for brilliance and quality. While GIA certification provides technical assurance, our expertise adds another layer of quality control by evaluating the visual performance of each diamond—how it captures and reflects light, which ultimately determines its beauty beyond what can be captured in a laboratory report.

We firmly believe that the internet should be available and accessible to anyone, and are committed to providing a website that is accessible to the widest possible audience, regardless of circumstance and ability.
To fulfill this, we aim to adhere as strictly as possible to the World Wide Web Consortium’s (W3C) Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.1 (WCAG 2.1) at the AA level. These guidelines explain how to make web content accessible to people with a wide array of disabilities. Complying with those guidelines helps us ensure that the website is accessible to all people: blind people, people with motor impairments, visual impairment, cognitive disabilities, and more.
This website utilizes various technologies that are meant to make it as accessible as possible at all times. We utilize an accessibility interface that allows persons with specific disabilities to adjust the website’s UI (user interface) and design it to their personal needs.
Additionally, the website utilizes an AI-based application that runs in the background and optimizes its accessibility level constantly. This application remediates the website’s HTML, adapts Its functionality and behavior for screen-readers used by the blind users, and for keyboard functions used by individuals with motor impairments.
If you’ve found a malfunction or have ideas for improvement, we’ll be happy to hear from you. You can reach out to the website’s operators by using the following email
Our website implements the ARIA attributes (Accessible Rich Internet Applications) technique, alongside various different behavioral changes, to ensure blind users visiting with screen-readers are able to read, comprehend, and enjoy the website’s functions. As soon as a user with a screen-reader enters your site, they immediately receive a prompt to enter the Screen-Reader Profile so they can browse and operate your site effectively. Here’s how our website covers some of the most important screen-reader requirements, alongside console screenshots of code examples:
Screen-reader optimization: we run a background process that learns the website’s components from top to bottom, to ensure ongoing compliance even when updating the website. In this process, we provide screen-readers with meaningful data using the ARIA set of attributes. For example, we provide accurate form labels; descriptions for actionable icons (social media icons, search icons, cart icons, etc.); validation guidance for form inputs; element roles such as buttons, menus, modal dialogues (popups), and others. Additionally, the background process scans all of the website’s images and provides an accurate and meaningful image-object-recognition-based description as an ALT (alternate text) tag for images that are not described. It will also extract texts that are embedded within the image, using an OCR (optical character recognition) technology. To turn on screen-reader adjustments at any time, users need only to press the Alt+1 keyboard combination. Screen-reader users also get automatic announcements to turn the Screen-reader mode on as soon as they enter the website.
These adjustments are compatible with all popular screen readers, including JAWS and NVDA.
Keyboard navigation optimization: The background process also adjusts the website’s HTML, and adds various behaviors using JavaScript code to make the website operable by the keyboard. This includes the ability to navigate the website using the Tab and Shift+Tab keys, operate dropdowns with the arrow keys, close them with Esc, trigger buttons and links using the Enter key, navigate between radio and checkbox elements using the arrow keys, and fill them in with the Spacebar or Enter key.Additionally, keyboard users will find quick-navigation and content-skip menus, available at any time by clicking Alt+1, or as the first elements of the site while navigating with the keyboard. The background process also handles triggered popups by moving the keyboard focus towards them as soon as they appear, and not allow the focus drift outside of it.
Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.
We aim to support the widest array of browsers and assistive technologies as possible, so our users can choose the best fitting tools for them, with as few limitations as possible. Therefore, we have worked very hard to be able to support all major systems that comprise over 95% of the user market share including Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari, Opera and Microsoft Edge, JAWS and NVDA (screen readers), both for Windows and for MAC users.
Despite our very best efforts to allow anybody to adjust the website to their needs, there may still be pages or sections that are not fully accessible, are in the process of becoming accessible, or are lacking an adequate technological solution to make them accessible. Still, we are continually improving our accessibility, adding, updating and improving its options and features, and developing and adopting new technologies. All this is meant to reach the optimal level of accessibility, following technological advancements. For any assistance, please reach out to
